Fiorentina's Centenary Gesture: Retiring Antognoni's No. 10 to Mend Relations
In a move aimed at bridging a divide with a club icon, Fiorentina's President Giuseppe B. Commisso has announced that the Number 10 jersey, famously worn by Giancarlo Antognoni, will be retired for the duration of the club's Centenary season. This decision, coinciding with Fiorentina's 100th anniversary in Italian football, signals a desire to mend the strained relationship with the legendary former midfielder.
Founded in 1927, Fiorentina is celebrating a century of existence this season. President Commisso, who assumed leadership following his father Rocco's passing, shared detailed plans for the anniversary festivities on the club's official website. Among these plans is a significant event scheduled for August 29th, where the Number 10 jersey, synonymous with Antognoni, will be symbolically retired.
Antognoni's Discontent with Club Management
However, this gesture comes with a caveat: the retirement of the Number 10 is temporary, intended only for the Centenary season of 2026/27, with the possibility of its return to the squad in the 2027/28 campaign. More importantly, this move is widely seen as an attempt to entice Antognoni to attend the Centenary celebrations and to smooth over the bitter rift that has developed between him and the current ownership and management.
As of now, Antognoni had reportedly been disinclined to participate in the Centenary events due to ongoing disputes with the late former President Rocco Commisso and ex-director Joe Barone. It remains to be seen whether this symbolic gesture will be sufficient to reconcile their differences.
Antognoni, now 72 years old, was a commanding presence for Fiorentina from 1972 to 1987, concluding his playing career in Switzerland with Lausanne before retiring in 1989. His legacy with the Viola is profound.
President Commisso's statement emphasized Antognoni's immense significance: "Giancarlo is not simply a great Fiorentina champion. Giancarlo is Fiorentina. He is Florence. He is the Viola jersey. He is the most iconic player ever to wear Fiorentinaβs number 10 jersey. He is talent, elegance and loyalty to one colour alone. He is the love of a man who gave Fiorentina something that cannot be measured only in appearances, goals or trophies. A World Cup winner who carried Fiorentina in his heart wherever he went."
"That is why I want him with all of us. We want him with all of us. Giancarlo is part of all of us. On August 29, as part of the Clubβs 100th Anniversary celebration, there will be many emotional and spectacular moments honouring Fiorentinaβs history, but there is one moment we wanted to place at the centre of the evening: in honour of Giancarlo Antognoni and his unique place in Fiorentinaβs history, we will retire the number 10 jersey during Fiorentinaβs 2026/27 100th Anniversary season only," Commisso added.
