Gasperini: Roma Squad Needs Reinforcements, Requested Four Players
Following a significant 4-1 friendly loss to Cardiff City, AS Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini voiced his concerns about the team's current state. He stated, "It's evident that this squad requires completion. My request was for a defender, a winger, and two strikers."
Roma has experienced a challenging pre-season campaign, including a previous instance where they squandered a three-goal lead to draw with Cannes. The recent defeat to Cardiff City has amplified these concerns.
"I believe we encountered difficulties in certain areas, particularly in defense during the first half, conceding goals due to unusual deflections," Gasperini commented to Tuttomercatoweb. "While there were some positive aspects, lapses in concentration, insufficient fitness, and a lack of focus inevitably lead to such outcomes."
Despite qualifying for the Champions League and having a slightly improved transfer budget, Roma has missed out on several key transfer targets. The coach, who was reportedly frustrated by the lack of acquisitions last summer, is determined to avoid a similar situation this year.
Gasperini emphasized the urgency of the situation: "The transfer market has truly picked up pace recently due to the World Cup, but I certainly expect movement from here on. We've seen a number of players depart, and it's clear that this squad needs to be bolstered. We will undoubtedly need to bring in new players to make the team competitive. Currently, we have three midfielders sidelined, some new arrivals are still settling in, and others are not yet fully match-fit."
The arrival of Santiago Castro from Bologna for β¬35 million plus add-ons was a significant acquisition, and he was immediately included in the starting lineup for the friendly. Gasperini acknowledged the signing's quality: "It is certainly a good signing; these are the types of players who elevate a team. Castro is primarily a center-forward, as is Donyell Malen, but there may be instances where they can play together. We have a demanding schedule ahead and will require rotation." He added, "Castro was determined to join Roma at all costs, so he represents a positive addition."
When questioned about his specific transfer requests to the Roma directors for the pre-season, Gasperini elaborated: "In comparison to last season, I specifically asked for a defender, a winger, and two strikers. Naturally, if a player leaves, they must be replaced. This was my objective, and it doesn't strike me as particularly difficult or unachievable. We are also actively pursuing high-quality players like Castro."
Roma has recently reached an agreement with Wolfsburg for the transfer of Greek defender Konstantinos Koulierakis, with the deal reportedly valued at β¬16.5 million plus add-ons. Koulierakis arrived at the airport that afternoon.
"With the arrival of this young player, we can solidify our defense, which was a necessity given we only had five players in that position. Having at least two players for each role is vital for any team competing in cup competitions," Gasperini warned. "Failure to do so will come at a significant cost."
