Serie A: Cagliari Secures 1-0 Victory Over Lecce with Maldini's Debut Goal
Daniel Maldini emerged as the standout player, netting the sole goal of the match as a commanding Cagliari secured a vital 1-0 home win against Lecce in Serie A on Monday evening.
Entering the fixture, the home side occupied 11th place in the Serie A standings, having achieved one win and one draw in their initial two league encounters of the 2026-27 season. Lecce shared the same point total but was positioned a few places lower in the standings due to goal difference.
The first goalkeeper called into action was Elia Caprile, who parried a Lassana Coulibaly header around the post for a Lecce corner early in the game.
However, it was a corner at the opposite end that propelled Cagliari into the lead midway through the first half. An inswinging corner, delivered by Jacopo Fazzini, was met by summer signing Maldini, who powerfully struck the ball into the net from the heart of the six-yard box. This marked the Italy hopeful's maiden goal since his transfer from Atalanta during the summer transfer window.
Nikola Stulic came closest to finding an equalizer for Lecce before halftime, but his left-footed attempt from a difficult angle on the left side of the penalty area was saved reasonably comfortably by Caprile.
Cagliari began to build momentum in the second half and nearly doubled their lead just before the hour mark. Mattia Felici capitalized on an error from Tiago Gabriel near his own penalty area and attempted a low cross for Maldini at the far post, but a crucial intervention from Kialonda Gaspar diverted the ball away from its intended target.
Maldini again threatened to extend Cagliari's advantage with a well-placed free-kick from an inviting position on the edge of the penalty area. The shot cleared the wall but struck the post before going out for a Lecce goal kick. Wladimiro Falcone would have been powerless had the effort found the target.
Lecce narrowly avoided conceding from their subsequent goal-kick, as Falcone's clearance was headed back into danger from midfield. Maldini went down seeking a penalty from Tiago Gabriel, but it was not awarded. Subsequently, Felici attempted to chip Falcone from the corner of the penalty area but lacked the necessary height on his shot.
Deep into injury time, Lecce had strong claims for a penalty when Konan N’Dri went down under a challenge from Roberto Gagliardini. Although replays showed their legs were entangled, a foul was not given, and the VAR officials did not deem the incident worthy of an on-field review.
While possession was relatively evenly distributed throughout the 90 minutes, Cagliari dominated in front of goal with 22 total attempts, 11 of which were on target. The visitors managed only two shots on target.
Tonight's result propels Cagliari up to ninth place in the Serie A standings, level with Frosinone in sixth. Lecce remains in the bottom half of the table, sitting 13th with three points from three games.
