UEFA's Alleged Payment for Employee Relationship with Gianni Infantino
A new and potentially damaging report has emerged concerning Gianni Infantino, the current FIFA president. According to an investigation by The Telegraph, UEFA allegedly made a substantial payment to a female employee who is reported to have had a relationship with Infantino when he served as UEFA's general secretary.
This development comes at a challenging time for Infantino, who has faced considerable criticism for his now-abandoned plan to bring private investors into the organization, which would have included the commercial structuring of World Cup organization. The Telegraph's revelations could further destabilize his position.
The report details that during his time as UEFA's general secretary, under the presidency of Michel Platini, UEFA reportedly disbursed a six-figure sum to an employee who was allegedly Infantino's mistress. The employee was reportedly promoted by Infantino during their alleged affair, receiving a 30% salary increase. Following her departure, UEFA is said to have funded her MBA at a business school. It is noted that Infantino has been married to Leena Al Ashqar since 2001 and has four children.
In response to inquiries from The Telegraph, UEFA acknowledged that a payment was made during that period and that they were aware of the allegations of a relationship between Infantino and the employee. The European governing body stated that they have since "strengthened" their rules to align with those of a "modern, leading organization."
On Friday evening, a FIFA spokesperson asserted that there have been no employee complaints regarding Infantino's conduct. The spokesperson categorically denied the allegations, stating, "President Gianni Infantino strongly refutes these allegations, which are entirely false. Any insinuation of inappropriate behavior or breach of statutes or regulations is defamatory."
