Barcelona's Debt Soars to €2.6 Billion Amidst Camp Nou Renovation and Temporary Move

FC Barcelona has requested club members to approve a new €510 million loan during the upcoming general assembly. The club also confirmed a temporary relocation from Camp Nou for the 2027-2028 season.

Despite a strong start to the current season, leading La Liga with seven wins in as many matches, and a full Camp Nou generating significant revenue, the club's economic future remains a concern. According to The Athletic, FC Barcelona's leadership has asked members to greenlight a new €510 million loan at the annual general assembly this Saturday to finalize the Camp Nou redevelopment.

New Stadium Bill Triples

If approved, this €510 million loan, with €300 million earmarked for construction and the remainder for additional costs, will inflate the club's debt to over €2 billion. The Athletic reports the total debt could reach €2.6 billion depending on payment schedules. This additional funding will push the total cost of the Espai Barça project to nearly €1.8 billion, almost triple the initial estimate from 2014. President Joan Laporta reportedly confirmed that the new loan will not cover the construction of the Palau Blaugrana, the arena for the club's other sports teams.

Barça to Return to Montjuïc

Spanish regulations do not prevent FC Barcelona from accumulating such debt, especially given the club's substantial annual revenues and its capacity for medium-to-long-term repayment. However, the ongoing Camp Nou works necessitate a temporary stadium change.

The club plans to finish the 2026-2027 season at Camp Nou and then move to a different venue for at least the first half of the following season. Following the pattern of the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 campaigns, Montjuïc is a likely candidate. Club vice-president Ferran Olivella has already informed members of a preliminary agreement with local authorities to return to Montjuïc.

"When we return to Camp Nou in January 2028, we anticipate a capacity of 95,000 seats, restoring our full potential for optimizing the club's financial management," the executive stated during the assembly. This increase in capacity is expected to help clear the debt and prepare for hosting the Champions League final on June 2, 2029, in a state-of-the-art stadium.
