Inter President Marotta Issues Warning: 'Cannot Spend Crazy Amounts of Money' Like Premier League

Inter President Beppe Marotta has cautioned that the club cannot hope to close the financial disparity with Premier League teams by "spending crazy amounts of money." His remarks come in the wake of Inter missing out on key transfer targets, including Marco Palestra, who joined Chelsea, and Anan Khalaili, whose medical examination prevented a move from Union Saint-Gilloise.

Speaking to Globo TV during Inter's pre-season tour in Australia, Marotta reflected on a challenging summer for the Serie A champions. He acknowledged the significant economic gap that now exists between Italian football and the Premier League, a stark contrast to the 1980s and 90s when Serie A was considered the global benchmark.

"In the 1980s and 90s, Serie A was the benchmark for football worldwide," Marotta stated. "Today, the balance has shifted, and the economic gap is evident. We cannot think of bridging that distance by spending crazy amounts of money."

Instead of competing financially, Marotta believes Inter's strategy must focus on other strengths. "Our response must be different: creativity, competence, and motivation. The idea that whoever spends the most money automatically wins is the opposite of sport. You have to build a team with values, making the most of management, coaches, staff, and players."

Marotta, who recently transitioned from General Manager to President following Oaktree's takeover from Suning, shared insights into his leadership philosophy. "A great manager taught me that the President has two fundamental rights: to choose the people he works with and set the values that he wants to build the club around. These are the principles that guide my every decision." He expressed strong alignment with the new ownership and highlighted the importance of projects like the new stadium in modernizing the club.

Despite a successful domestic campaign last season, where Inter secured the Serie A title and Coppa Italia, their Champions League performance was less impressive. However, Marotta affirmed the club's consistent ambition: "The expectations are the same as always; Inter participates in every competition with the aim of achieving the maximum result. This club has won many trophies throughout its history, which describes our identity more than any words can. We are a club accustomed to winning, but behind every victory, there is passion, struggle, a work ethic, and a sense of belonging."
