Ligue 2: Saint-Etienne's Blazing Start, Dominating Sochaux and Leading the Table

The opening day of Ligue 2 delivered plenty of excitement this Saturday, particularly in the clash between former giants Sochaux and Saint-Etienne. At Bonal, the Greens secured a resounding 3-0 victory, propelling them to the top of the league table.

These triumphant beginnings offer hope to the supporters. Saint-Étienne, aiming for promotion after missing out last year, began their season with a dominant win on the pitch of promoted side Sochaux (3-0) on Saturday evening. In contrast, Nantes disappointed, suffering a 1-0 defeat against Red Star on the first matchday of Ligue 2.

The Greens made their decisive impact in just six minutes, scoring three goals between the 22nd and 28th minutes. This included a brace from forward Irvin Cardona, who celebrated his 29th birthday with a memorable performance. New Danish signing Jakob Breum, who impressed during pre-season, had an ideal evening, netting the match's opener and providing an assist.

At Pau, one couldn't afford to be late to witness the first goal of this Ligue 2 season, scored by Annecy defender Axel Drouhin in the 11th minute. A few minutes later, midfielder Clément Billemaz from Haute-Savoie made his mark by receiving the league's first red card. Playing with ten men for nearly eighty minutes, Annecy held on to secure a 1-0 victory. FC Metz, who finished last in Ligue 1 last season and are known for their rapid returns to the top flight, came from behind to defeat Guingamp at their home ground in Saint-Symphorien (2-1), thanks to two quick goals from Pape Moussa Fall (58th) and Giorgi Abuachvili (60th). In the second round of matches, Metz will travel to Grenoble, who were beaten 4-2 away by Dunkerque on Saturday evening.
