Malagò could be appointed FIGC special commissioner, replacing himself

The Lega Serie A supports Giovanni Malagò for FIGC President, but a peculiar scenario is emerging: revoking his recent election to appoint him as a special commissioner.

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) commission will decide tomorrow if Malagò's June election will be annulled, placing the Federation under a commissioner.

Malagò was not a registered FIGC member when elected, making his candidacy ineligible.

Despite this, the Lega Serie A reiterated its support for Malagò in a formal statement today, calling a special commissioner "entirely inopportune" and warning of chaos for Italian football during a sensitive period.

UEFA has also cautioned that appointing a commissioner could jeopardize Italy's co-hosting of EURO 2032 with Turkey.

However, an extraordinary and unconventional plan is gaining traction.

Sky Sport Italia reports that CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio has scheduled a meeting with Malagò for tomorrow morning to discuss the possibility of the FIGC being placed under a special commissioner – with Malagò himself filling that role.

Although his election as President is invalid due to missing documentation, Malagò could legally serve as commissioner and pursue the same reform agenda.

This arrangement could provide the FIGC time to either grant Malagò membership and conduct a new election, or revise electoral rules to make him eligible for future elections.

Interestingly, Malagò briefly served as special commissioner for the Lega Serie A for one month in early 2018 when they struggled to elect a new president. He held the CONI presidency at that time, the same body now reviewing his FIGC eligibility.
