Montella: ‘I want to continue as Turkiye coach, we inflated expectations’

Vincenzo Montella stated his intention to remain Turkiye's coach, acknowledging that recent successes led to inflated expectations.

The Italian tactician faces mounting pressure after an early World Cup exit and a poor showing in the Nations League. Turkiye has lost all three matches in the current campaign, scoring one goal and conceding eight against France, Italy, and Belgium.

Montella's commitment to Turkiye

"This is a new situation for us, playing four games in 11 days, and our first time at this level," Montella told Sky Sport Italia. He highlighted the absence of key players, including injured forward Kenan Yildiz, midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, suspended talent Arda Guler, and striker Baris Alper Yilmaz. Midfielder Can Uzun is also dealing with a muscular issue.

"We want to compete, but we are missing important players. This is an opportunity to introduce new faces who can contribute for years," Montella added.

Calls for Montella's dismissal and resignations from the Turkish football federation leadership have intensified amid a betting scandal. Despite criticism, Montella expressed pride in his three years as Turkiye's coach and the affection he has received.

"I am only sorry I haven't met expectations recently. That's partly because we inflated them with past results," he explained. "I am motivated and confident. The players believe in our work, and I certainly want to continue."

Facing Italy and his former teammate Roberto Mancini on the touchline is a significant moment for Montella. "It was emotional the first time, even in a friendly. Now, I'm almost used to it. This is football," he commented.
