Bonucci: Vialli's Words Were Key to Italy's EURO 2020 Triumph
Leonardo Bonucci, now part of Roberto Mancini's Italy staff, spoke about Gianluca Vialli's significant influence on the players. "His words truly resonated with us," Bonucci stated.
During the EURO 2020 win, Bonucci played defense, Mancini coached, and Vialli served as delegation chief. The entire team acknowledges Vialli's crucial role in their success, a sentiment echoed even after his passing in January 2023.
Bonucci paid tribute to Vialli at an awards ceremony in Rimini named in his honor.
“It’s always moving to share these moments remembering Gianluca. I hold onto unforgettable memories; he set a powerful example for me and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” Bonucci shared.
“During the Euros, he was fundamental to our success. We had missed the World Cup, and speaking with him the day after losing the playoff to North Macedonia showed me what a remarkable man he was.”
Vialli was known for his impactful addresses to the team. Bonucci explained these weren't last-minute locker room talks, but rather conversations held when the squad had time to absorb his message.
“He spoke the day before matches, at dinner. He didn’t need to shout; his words went deep. They left us with a strong desire to go out and fight for something historic.”
Vialli battled cancer for an extended period before his death at 58 in January 2023.
“Despite his illness, you'd see him training on the track at Coverciano each morning, determined to stay fit. It was a powerful message to us all and meant a great deal,” Bonucci concluded.
