Cristiano Ronaldo's Explosive Statement: Betrayal by Coach, Apologies, and Future with Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence with a lengthy statement addressing his departure from the Portugal national team during a training camp. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner detailed the events, criticizing coach Jorge Jesus and asserting his intention to continue his international career.
Ronaldo's explanation has finally been released, offering a detailed account of his perspective. His exit from the Seleção camp in Denmark caused significant upheaval, and his statement from Al Nassr sheds light on the situation, with CR7 accusing coach Jorge Jesus of dishonesty.
"The coach did not keep his word to me," Ronaldo stated regarding the playing time he was promised during the four-match international break. "I decided to leave the camp without waiting for another breach of his word. For me, the truth is the most important thing in relationships between people. Even if it hurts, I want to be told the truth," he wrote.
A Tailored Plan
The situation escalated after Portugal's exit in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. When consulted about Jorge Jesus's potential appointment, the former Real Madrid player initially supported his arrival as national coach. "A few days later, the new coach contacted me for the first time, saying he wanted to meet me in person. I accepted, and we scheduled a meeting after my vacation. That day, the coach told me he was counting on me and that my presence was crucial for his project. He immediately presented me with a plan for my participation. He said I would play the first and last match, and to manage physical effort, he would make three to four substitutions per game," he explained.
According to CR7, Jorge Jesus suggested he skip the matches in Norway and Denmark, an offer Ronaldo refused. "It wasn't because I wouldn't play the away games that I would stop assuming my role as captain. This privilege of staying in Portugal would not have set a good example. The coach ultimately shared my analysis."
Against Norway, Ronaldo learned he would play 30 minutes, which was not part of the initial plan and did not happen. "Everyone knows what followed. I warmed up at halftime, watched the minutes go by, and I wasn't called. The coach had not kept his word to me." This was the final straw. "At the end of the match, I only wanted everything to end with a victory and to be left alone. I did not go to greet the fans. That was a mistake for which I am solely responsible and which should not have happened."
A New 'Betrayal' That Angers Him
Following this, the striker expected a clear explanation from Jorge Jesus at a press conference, after privately clarifying matters with him and the Portuguese Football Federation president. "He was supposed to say that I had never asked to play any minutes, that he, and no one else, had proposed this plan for the camp, and that sending me to warm up without playing me was a mistake he wouldn't repeat. (...) A short document was drafted, which I personally validated and which, to my knowledge, was given to the coach as he had requested. The press conference unfolded as everyone knows: his attitude had nothing to do with our meeting. I heard expressions and an aggressiveness I don't think I deserve, a posture of 'I want, I can, and I command' that he had absolutely never shown me in private the day before," he added, sharing the full text of the note he had validated and which the coach was meant to read to journalists.
Faced with this new 'betrayal,' Cristiano Ronaldo chose to leave the national team before the match against Denmark. "During a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Federation and the coach, on the morning of that press conference, I repeated that if they didn't want me, they should tell me. They just needed to be frank with me. I would have accepted it, and I promised we would prepare something beautiful, as I dream it will happen, and that no one would be angry. I remember it as if it were today. They replied in unison: no. That my place was in the national team."
'A Broken Promise Has a Decisive Impact'
The Al Nassr player also took the time to apologize to his teammates and all Portuguese citizens. "A broken promise has, for me, a decisive impact. I felt that from that moment on, my presence would only harm the group, and I did what I always said I would do if I no longer felt useful: I packed my bags and left."
CR7, who describes Jorge Jesus's broken promise as a "total betrayal," also clarified his future: no, he does not intend to retire from international football, and he will be available for the national team once he has served any likely "suspension" imposed by the Portuguese federation.
"If I am in full physical condition, if I play for my club and score goals, after serving my suspension, I will be available – as always – to play and win with our national team," he wrote.
