Derek Cornelius: Canada Coach Expects Months-Long Absence After Hip Injury

Canada's national team coach, Jesse Marsch, shared concerning news regarding Derek Cornelius. The defender, who suffered an injury during a seemingly innocuous play, faces a potentially lengthy recovery period.

Cornelius has accumulated only 93 minutes of playing time this season. Despite this limited role, his absence would be a significant blow to a struggling Bruno Genesio, who is short on defensive options. The Marseille defender injured his hip during a training session with the Canadian squad and could be out for an extended period.

“It happened right at the end of training. We were doing a three-team game. Derek and Jonathan David, who are like best friends, were fighting for a ball in the corner. Derek bent down to get it, and his knee got stuck in the ground, which forced his hip to react. He hurt his hip,” Canada coach Jesse Marsch stated on Wednesday.

“We think it could be similar to what Promise David had, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that it's not too serious, but it could keep him out for a few months,” Marsch added. Promise David, an attacker for Union Saint-Gilloise, underwent surgery and was sidelined until June after a hip injury from a bad fall in late February 2026.

“Derek’s leg and knee got caught, and it was clear he was in pain. Everyone is sorry. We’ve had a few cases like this before, and it’s always tough. What’s comforting is seeing the whole team rally around Derek. We’ll take care of him and make sure he's not alone,” Marsch continued. Transported to the hospital, Cornelius had hoped to gain playing time with his national team during this camp. He is a key player for Canada, with 48 caps and four appearances in the last World Cup.

The 28-year-old returned to OM this summer after a disappointing loan spell at Rangers. This season, he has featured in brief appearances in Ligue 1: seven minutes against Strasbourg, 17 minutes against Paris FC, and two minutes against Rennes. Genesio started him only once, in the Europa League match against Besiktas, which OM lost 4-1.
