Italy's revamped football federation is reportedly making a serious effort to attract Pep Guardiola to manage their national team. Sources indicate that Paolo Maldini and Leonardo met with the renowned Catalan coach in Barcelona over the weekend.

According to Sky Sport, via CalcioMercato, the two executives from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) traveled to Barcelona to hold direct discussions with the former Manchester City manager regarding the head coach position.

The meeting is understood to have lasted the entire weekend, with social media posts capturing the presence of Maldini and Leonardo in Spain. While the specific details and outcome of these conversations remain confidential, it is evident that a formal approach has been made.

Malagò's Approval Crucial as Guardiola Talks Intensify

The ultimate decision now rests with Giovanni Malagò, the FIGC president, who would need to approve a significantly larger financial commitment than the federation has previously been prepared to make.

Earlier, Malagò had acknowledged the existence of alternatives to Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo for the managerial role, while also highlighting the federation's budgetary limitations. These comments take on a new significance in light of the Barcelona meeting.

"Beyond Mancini and Pirlo, there could be other names," Malagò had stated. "To those who suggest aiming for a top-tier option, I ask: even if he were interested, what would his demands be? And would they be compatible with our budget? Currently, our books only reflect the remaining sum from Gattuso's salary, which is a thousand miles away from the wishes of a top coach." He suggested that any substantial expenditure of this nature might only be feasible in the 2027 fiscal year.
