Ronald Araujo Joins Liverpool on Loan from Barcelona
Uruguayan international defender Ronald Araujo is set to make a move to Liverpool, joining the Premier League club on a one-year loan from FC Barcelona. The 27-year-old player will reinforce the Reds' central defense for the 2026-2027 season.
The transfer is now official, with both clubs announcing Araujo's temporary move on Monday evening. The 27-year-old, who has represented Uruguay 27 times, initially joined Barcelona's B team in 2018 before being promoted to the senior squad the following season.
After seven years with the Catalan giants, Araujo departs Camp Nou having made 213 appearances across all competitions and scoring 14 goals. "I'm really looking forward to getting started, I'm very, very happy," the center-back stated in Liverpool's official announcement.
"It was the ideal choice for me at this stage of my career"
The Uruguayan expressed his significant enthusiasm for his new surroundings. "I'm delighted to be here, at this prestigious club with so much history. I can't wait to meet my teammates, start playing, and I'm very motivated and eager to get going," he declared.
"I think it was the ideal choice for me at this stage of my career. It was a necessary choice. As soon as I learned of Liverpool's interest, everything happened very quickly," Araujo added. He will join Liverpool for the 2026-2027 season, subject to obtaining a work permit and international clearance, as confirmed by the English club.
This signing marks Liverpool's second defensive recruit this summer, following the acquisition of young French defender JΓ©rΓ©my Jacquet from Rennes for β¬63 million. These additions are intended to support the experienced Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defense, especially after the departures of Rhys Williams and Ibrahima KonatΓ©, who has since moved to Real Madrid.
